This update aim's to target websites with poor profiles links and bad link building techniques.Till now you must be aware of backlinks and their types. Now, in 2014, you have to be careful while doing SEO of your site. Various techniques which you used to do previously to get backlinks , can harm your site now.  Getting Too Many Backlinks - Using Softwares and from Low PR Sites

Previously it was a popular technique and proven fact that more the links are pointing to your site, more the high rank site will have in search engine results. But now it can be very dangerous. Now Google check Quality over Quantity. It does't matter how many links are pointing to your site, links should be from popular site with high PR.
Use of various softwares to get backlinks by publishing comments on various related low PR sites was also a common way of getting back links. But now Google evaluates backlinks Quality over Quantity so this practice if you are using, stop it. Sometimes we also post comments on various sites with our blog/site link. This can also harm if subject site is not related to your site/contents or has bad PR.

It was a common and working practice to optimized anchor text with keyword to make site SEO better. You might be wondering what is an optimized anchor text?  Directory and Forum Links Building

There are many directories which have been downgraded and got penalties after recent Google updates. Such directories just require submission fee and they will allow anyone to post on their site and this makes impossible to maintain quality contents control. But there are some good directories as well which are approved by Google, has high quality contents and such directories are expensive. Off-course, a good site will not allow anyone to post to their site and they also apply nofollow link. You might be knowing about nofollow and dofollow links.
Similar to this, forum posting is considered a big spammy way of generating links. What a forum does that you are given a signature link for your site after publishing a certain amount of posts. Then your signature will appear in every post and comment which you will post.

 Keyword Rich Contents

You might have heard about this before as well. Keyword heavy contents are not a good option. For example, "Best SEO Tips 2014" is a long tail keyword and will not bring any good. Instead a better way would have been 'SEO Tips'. You should keep in mind that adding more keyword is not going help. Instead use more contents in terms of posts and pages as well. The more pages you have, the more pages of your site will be indexed.

 Spammy Links

There can be several ways in which spammy links are generated. Most cheap form is blogs comments. By using some softwares, sites or Google commands to find relevant sites/blogs and comment just for the sake of posting your link. You must keep in mind that all high PR sites put nofollow attribute to such links and in return you get nothing. Other spammy ways can be posting links to low PR forums, article submitting sites and directories.
